Securities Donation Overview

EXPLAINING GIFTS OF SECURITIES

What is meant by “Gift of Securities?”

A gift of publicly-traded securities, such as stocks, bonds or mutual fund units is a great way to help achieve a world free of mental health stigma where all people possess the knowledge to embrace acceptance and understanding of themselves and one another.  It is also the least expensive way to make a gift to Stigma-Free Mental Health Society.

What are the benefits to making a “Gift of Securities”?

If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to sell them, half (50%) of the capital gain is taxable, up to two-thirds, if you have gains over $250,000. Quite often, appreciated securities are considered “locked-in capital” because of a reluctance to realize the potential tax on large capital gains. However, if you donate these securities “in-kind” (meaning not sold, but directly as shares/units) to the Society, you will not pay any tax on the capital gain. There is a “zero inclusion rate” applied to the full value of the gift if made to a Canadian registered charity, such as Stigma-Free Mental Health Society. The charitable tax credit you receive will offset tax on other income.

You will be making a lasting gift to charity during your lifetime, and this can also be done in your estate.
