Board Director Job Description

Position Title: Board Director – Volunteer Role

Organization: Stigma-Free Mental Health Society

Reports To: Board Chair and Co-Founder – Dave Richardson

Overview of Organization:

The Stigma-Free Mental Health Society (SFMHS) is dedicated to transforming perceptions of mental health through education in schools and focus on rural communities. We aim to build awareness, understanding, and acceptance—empowering individuals to break down stigma. Our programs foster inclusive environments where mental health is understood as a vital part of overall well-being. We believe everyone deserves a future free from judgment and discrimination.

Role Description:

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will play a vital role in guiding the strategic direction, governance, and sustainability of Stigma-Free Mental Health Society. Board members work collaboratively to ensure the organization fulfills its mission, maintains legal and financial integrity, and maximizes its impact within the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend and actively participate in approx. six meetings per year, providing leadership and oversight to ensure organizational effectiveness.
  • Support the President and Co-Founder, Andrea Paquette by focusing on organizational growth and leveraging personal and professional networks to develop partnerships, secure funding, and advocate for the organization’s mission.
  • Contribute to the development and approval of strategic goals and help monitor progress toward those objectives.
  • Review and approve annual budgets, financial statements, and quarterly reports. Ensure the organization maintains sound financial practices.
  • Ensure organization adheres to legal, ethical, and operational standards, and periodically review/update policies.
  • Attend and participate in the Society’s Annual General Meeting.
  • Promote the organization’s mission and programs within the community and help foster valuable relationships with key stakeholders – community and financial.
  • Lived experience related to mental health or stigma reduction is welcome and appreciated.

Qualifications:

  • Deep passion about the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to commit time for meetings, events, and outreach activities.
  • Experience in fundraising, finance, legal, or leadership roles is a plus.
  • A commitment to supporting mental health awareness, understanding and acceptance.

3-year term, with possible renewal.
